Tobacco and Your Health

Did you know that one cigarette contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including: pesticides, turpentine (a paint thinner), formaldehyde (to preserve dead animals), acetone (nail polish remover and dry cleaning solvent), ammonia (window cleaner), cadmium (battery fuel), and benzene (motor fuel)?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified second-hand smoke as a Group A (know human) carcinogen. Cigarette smoke contains more than 40 chemicals known to cause cancer.

On June 27, 2006, the U.S. Surgeon General released "The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General". This comprehensive scientific report concludes that there is no risk-free level of exposure to second-hand smoke. The website provides the full report, remarks by the U.S. Surgeon General, and fact sheets about second-hand smoke.
