Ottawa Council on Smoking
and Health (OCSH)

The
OCSH is a coalition of health agencies, community
organizations and individuals that works to reduce
tobacco use. The goals of the OCSH are
to:
- create
a social environment where non-smoking is the
norm
- assist
in establishing smoke-free
environments
- prevent
youth from starting to smoke
- encourage
smokers to quit
The

one of the oldest Councils on Smoking and Health in
the province and indeed in Canada, the mission is
to eliminate the use of tobacco in the new City of
Ottawa.

Cancer
Care Ontario - Eastern Region

The
Cancer Care Ontario Eastern Region Preventive
Oncology Network is made up of agencies interested
in the area of cancer prevention and addresses
local needs to reduce the incidence and mortality
of cancer. It is a Network of Cancer Care Ontario
for the Eastern Region of the province. As the
provincial government's principal adviser on cancer
issues, Cancer Care Ontario is responsible for
long-term planning of the cancer care system. The
organization sets direction and provides leadership
in cancer surveillance, prevention, screening,
research, treatment and supportive care.

Care Ontario Eastern Region Preventive Oncology
Network is currently in the process of developing
its plan for 2001, focusing on strategies that
address lifestyle and environmental changes, as
well as early detection and screening
programs.

Regional
Heart Beat Committee
and the Ottawa Heart Beat Program

The
Regional Heart Beat Committee is a community based
coalition of groups, organizations, associations,
and businesses committed to promoting and
supporting heart health and chronic disease
prevention. This organization promotes tobacco-free
living, healthy eating and physical activity. Heart
Beat partners have been working together since 1988
to increase awareness, support individual behaviour
change, and contribute to a healthy, supportive
environment. Ottawa Heart Beat is one of the 36
programs in Ontario partially funded by the Ontario
Heart Health Program of the Ministry of Health and
Long Tern Care. The Regional Heart Beat Committee
supports 17 project areas within the City of Ottawa
and is committed to advocacy initiatives which
improve the health of the community.
