What is exposé?
exposé is the largest youth-led anti tobacco industry campaign in ALL of Canada. We’re a team of public health staff, youth facilitators and student volunteers from all across Ottawa that are dedicated to exposing the truth about the tobacco industry.
The tobacco industry knows that their customers are dying everyday so they are in continuous need of new ones. And they also know that if you don’t start smoking by the time you are 18 you probably never will. Keeping this in mind, the tobacco industry targets youth with exciting flavours and “cool” lifestyles, so that youth will get hooked on their deadly products and put more money into their pockets.
It is exposé’s job to let youth know that this is what the tobacco industry is up to so we can all fight back!
Why do we even exist?
With the health effects of tobacco products becoming more and more obvious to youth, someone needed to step up and take a stand on the issue! We need to denormalize this product and the industry that stands behind it because it is a danger to society. Everyday, exposé works hard to educate youth on the dangers of tobacco and the tobacco industry’s manipulative tactics.
Do we have goals?
Why, yes, of course we do! Our goal is to lower the youth smoking rates in Ottawa to 10% by 2012.
In 2003, a survey revealed that the smoking rate among youth in Ottawa was 21%. This same survey indicated that by 2005 it had already dropped to 16%.
How are we going to get there?
Since we started in 2002, exposé has been in over 45 Ottawa high schools, including some adult campuses, alternative high schools and also some elementary schools. Now, in 2008-2009, we’re still hard at work doing what we do best: educating, advocating and motivating all over Ottawa! It is through education, advocacy and motivation that we will lower smoking rates and raise awareness about the tobacco industry and their deadly products.
But we can’t do it alone!
We have some awesome community partners that help us reach youth.
The Ottawa 67’s are great partners. With them, we run a “Slapshot the Industry” competition, offer the Pat Whalen Memorial Scholarship, and set up a large booth on the concord during some of their home games. Come check us out at a game!
We encourage youth to:
Examine the facts. Express your thoughts. Expose the truth about the tobacco industry.
Stand up! Speak out! Fight back!
